Micromax launches world’s lightest touch phone
Oct 21st
NEW DELHI: Indian mobile handsets company Micromax Wednesday launched a touch screen smartphone , modu T, in partnership with Israel-based modu Limited to tap the “aspirational” segment of the consumers.
The 3.5G modu T was awarded the Guinness World Record for being the lightest touch phone in the world.
Priced at Rs.12,000, the 2.2-inch touch screen phone will be available in the market with pre-bundled 2GB memory card from Oct 22.
The phone comes with two “fy” devices, jackets, which when connected, add new features to the phone. The “camerafy” jacket converts the phone into a camera with a 5 megapixel resolution and LED flash. Alternatively, you can also “sportfy” your modu T phone and turn it into your exercise companion.
modu is a modular phone, which operates on Qualcomm’s Brew operating system, offers a variety of applications such as YouTube, Google Search, Twitter, Facebook Flickr, TuneWiki, eBuddy and Snaptu.
“Innovation has been a driver for Micromax success in India and we believe that by bringing the modu T phone to India, we are targeting the ‘aspirational’ segment of Indian consumers, who are the early adopters of technology and passionate about electronic gadgets,” said Vikas Jain, business director, Micromax.
The company also said it will launch five models in the Brazilian market and is waiting for the approval from Anatel, the telecom regulator of Brazil.
Jain said the company is also looking forward to launch tablets in the market.
“We are exploring the option of bringing tablets… however it depends on the consumer response once the third generation services are available in the market.”
The company has also filed a draft red herring prospectus (DRHP) with securities and exchange board of India for an initial public offering (IPO).
Micromax Among Top 5 Handset Makers In India
Sep 30th
Finnish handset maker Nokia is losing its market share in India, according to the latest IDC report. Despite of retaining the No.1 position in the country, Nokia currently has a market share of 36.3% at the end of June 2010 from 54% at the end of June 2009. The Korean giant Samsung retained the No. 2 position, while Chinese brand G’Five emerged as the No. 3 player.
According to IDC’s India Quarterly Mobile Handsets Tracker, 2Q 2010, September 2010 release, the number of emerging vendors in India’s burgeoning mobile handsets market grew to 35 in 2Q 2010 and they together garnered 33.2% of total shipments for the first time during the April-June 2010 quarter. This represented a manifold increase from five new vendors representing a 0.9% combined share of units shipped in the January-March 2008 quarter.
During the last 6 months (January-June 2010) the top five mobile handset vendors in India were Nokia, Samsung, G’Five, Micromax and Spice.
According to IDC’s India Quarterly Mobile Handsets Tracker, shipments of mobile handsets in India grew by 6.3% quarter-on-quarter (2Q 2010 over 1Q 2010) to touch an all time high of 38.63 million units in a single quarter. In a significant new development, the study found that Dual- and Triple-SIM card slot phones have grown to touch as much as 38.5% of the total India Mobile Handset shipments, from less than 1% in 2Q 2009 (April-June 2009 quarter).
According to Anirban Banerjee, associate vice president, research, IDC India, “In the recent quarters several new players successfully launched their own devices at significantly lower Average Selling Values (ASVs) in the price sensitive India market. Such handsets found ready acceptance amongst first time buyers, especially from small towns and villages.”
This influx of new brands led to a spurt in overall market and saw ‘emerging vendors’ corner as much as 33.2% of total India mobile handset shipments in 2Q 2010, finds the study.
According to Naveen Mishra, lead telecoms analyst, IDC India, “The India mobile market saw a unique trend of multi SIM phones capturing 38.5 per cent of the market. This could be attributed to several new service providers responding with highly competitive tariff plans to a price sensitive mobile telephony user market.”
