RIM BlackBerry Playbook
Jan 12th
Research in Motion (RIM) has been scarred this year; as they lost their fourth place in cellphone sales to a comparatively young player. There were also reports of them losing corporate clients to competitive platforms. They’re planning to hit back, their unicorn being a spanking new tablet called the Playbook. It was announced back in September last year, and instead of letting people get a touch-and-feel of it, they rather dazzled us with its specifications. A dual-core processor with each core running at 1GHz and 1GB RAM; it sounded very amazing before the CES 2011, where you had tablets left-right-center that sported such specs. Not to say that we aren’t excited about the Playbook even today.
Sporting a Galaxy Tab-like 7-inch display makes it more smaller than the competition. It runs the QNX operating system, with a UI that seems to borrow from BlackBerry’s OS 6 (especially the home-screen). But the visual multi-tasking is quite the treat; showing off the PlayBook’s hardware prowess, as Engadget found out after running a 1080p HD video, Quake3, the music and the photo gallery app – All Running At the Same Time!
There’s a microHDMI port on-board that should allow you to hook the Tablet up directly to a bigger screen. This is a bonus for people working within the BlackBerry ecosystem – the Playbook will play well with your existing BlackBerry cellphone and let you accomplish some of its tasks on the bigger screen. The Webkit-based browser will also support Adobe Flash much like Android tablets. With respect to apps, RIM has opened an alternative door for developers to make apps work with the Playbook by using the Adobe Air platform. Multimedia-wise, the Playbook too supports 1080p HD video playback and has front-back cameras as well. It will have 3G and 4G support in the future.

All in all, the Playbook seems to be a serious take on the ‘enterprise’ tablet market — without loosing out on the fun part of things.
